Immigrant Pupils’ Center Voted In

The Glendale Board of Education voted Tuesday to establish a registration and testing center for immigrant children entering the school system.
The center will open Aug. 29 in district headquarters at 223 N. Jackson St. and be administered by the school district’s Intercultural Affairs Office.
It will coordinate the evaluation and registration of students who speak limited English, and will be staffed with English-speaking teachers’ aides who also speak Vietnamese, Tagalog--the native language of the Philippines--Armenian, Korean or Spanish.
The center, which will be financed by two federal grants, is expected to have an initial cost of $50,000, which could increase to $90,000 over two years, said Vic Pallos, spokesman for the district.
The center will focus on serving only secondary-school students at first because testing those students is more complex, officials said.
