South African President Pieter W. Botha voiced grave concern over the health of Nelson R. Mandela but said he is satisfied that the imprisoned black nationalist leader is receiving the best medical care. Replying to a request from Mandela’s family that the government allow a private medical team to examine Mandela, Botha said Mandela, 70, is being treated by doctors who are “internationally recognized as experts in their fields.”
