Torrance Police Chief Donald Nash has announced the promotion of several longtime administrators in anticipation of Deputy Police Chief Melville Hone’s retirement later this month.
Hone, 56, is leaving after 27 years with the Torrance Police Department. He rose through the ranks from police officer to captain and was appointed in January, 1987, to the newly created post of deputy chief, the department’s second-ranking position.
Capt. Jim Popp, 53, will replace Hone as deputy chief after serving for the last 12 years as commander of the department’s investigative bureau. He has been with the department for 29 years.
Lt. Larry Robinson, a 25-year veteran, will move up to the rank of captain, assuming command of the traffic and emergency services bureau. Those responsibilities have been held by Capt. Jim Weyant, who is taking over the investigative bureau.
Sgt. Michael Tamble is being promoted to lieutenant, and Officer David Smith has been elevated to sergeant.
Hone and the newly promoted employees will be honored in a ceremony today at Torrance police headquarters.
