A man riding a stolen motorcycle on the Golden State Freeway through the Santa Clarita Valley was fatally injured when he crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer rig and slid more than 300 feet, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.
The 22-year-old Modesto man, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, died shortly before midnight Wednesday, about four hours after the accident near Hungry Valley Road, Officer Ralph Elvira said.
Elvira said the motorcycle, stolen Tuesday in Modesto, was speeding southbound at an estimated 90 m.p.h. when it struck the rear of a flatbed trailer.
The motorcycle skidded and burst into flames with the rider still caught beneath it.
A passing CHP officer, Jim Curry, extinguished the flames.
The truck driver, who was not identified, was not injured.
The motorcycle rider was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, where he died.
