The Cuban government continues to imprison citizens who speak out against it, but it has also taken significant steps toward improving human rights, Amnesty International reported. Cuba’s release of large numbers of political prisoners over the last 18 months and improvement of prison conditions were welcomed by the London-based human rights organization. However, hundreds of political prisoners remain in jail, mostly charged with “enemy propaganda” for writing or saying things that the government disapproved of, the report said. It was written after a three-member Amnesty International team visited Cuba in March for the first time since 1977.
