New Delhi imposed direct federal rule on India’s northeastern state of Mizoram in an effort to end a 10-day political crisis brought on by a rebellion in the Mizo National Front, the state’s governing party. The rebellion left the state government with a minority in the legislature. Under the constitution, elections must be held within a year. Mizoram, which borders Burma and Bangladesh, is the fourth state placed under direct control, known as president’s rule. The others are violence-torn Punjab and politically unsettled Tamil Nadu and Nagaland.
