WASHINGTON — Democrats on the House Banking Committee demonstrated Friday that they will not be beaten on the patriotism issue, which has become a big part of the presidential election campaign.
“Vote for this American amendment,” said Rep. Frank Annunzio (D-Ill.) in proposing that thrift industry officials be allowed to serve on a commission to investigate the problems of the thrift industry.
As he waved a small American flag, an aide punched the buttons on a tape recorder, filling the hearing room with the sounds of “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Several Democratic members of the committee jumped to their feet, and began reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
The committee adopted Annunzio’s proposal.
