Camarillo 9, Royal 6--Ernest Rittenhouse kicked a 22-yard field goal with 28 seconds to play to give Camarillo the victory in a league opener at Camarillo.
Two minutes earlier, Rittenhouse’s 27-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Tom Harris. That try was set up by a 59-yard scamper down the left sideline by sophomore Kris Kirksey, who rushed for 184 yards in 23 carries.
Royal took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by William McNamara (10 carries for 40 yards). Camarillo junior Greg Exler (10 carries for 65 yards) tied the score in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard scoring run, but Harris blocked Rittenhouse’s conversion kick.
Royal quarterback Pat Ledesma completed 6 of 16 passes for 107 yards, all to brothers James and Jason Jones. James had 4 catches for 47 yards and Jason had 2 catches for 60.
