Tennis Roundup : Mayotte to Meet Marty Davis in Queensland Open Final

Tim Mayotte, who was upset by Marty Davis in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. team championships almost a decade ago, will get another crack at Davis today in the final of the $250,000 Queensland Open tennis tournament at Brisbane, Australia.

The top-seeded Mayotte overcame Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, and Davis defeated Brod Dyke of Australia, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals Saturday.

Regarding their NCAA meeting, Mayotte said, “I was playing No. 1 for Stanford, and he was No. 2 for (Cal). It was a big occasion.”

Davis will be playing in his first singles final since 1985.

Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland upset second-seeded Jimmy Connors, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in the semifinals of the $270,000 Swiss Indoor tournament at Basel, Switzerland.

Hlasek will play Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg of Sweden, who beat Jonas Svensson, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

John McEnroe withdrew from the Australian Indoor tennis championships for medical reasons, the third time in 5 years that he has pulled out on the day of the draw. McEnroe did not disclose his injury.

Chris Evert defeated Stephanie Rehe, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals at New Orleans. Evert will face Ann Smith, who beat 14-year-old Monica Seles, 6-1, 6-3.
