The Navy has awarded $15.2 million in repair contracts to the National Steel & Shipbuilding Co., yard officials announced Wednesday. The contracts, which cover three ships, will become effective in January and run through November, 1989.
Nassco officials said about 200 employees are expected to work on each ship. The company has a work force of about 1,800 and relies almost exclusively on military work.
The shipyard now has a $290-million, three-year contract from the Navy for the AOE, a fast combat-support ship. Before the new contracts were obtained, the only other work at the shipyard was an overhaul of another ship, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
