Local News in Brief : Educator Appointed to Topanga Erosion Panel

Calabasas environmental educator Nancy Helsley has been appointed to the board of directors of the Topanga-Las Virgenes Resource Conservation District to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of another board member, officials said Thursday.
Helsley succeeds Jill Workman, also of Calabasas. Her term will run through November, 1990.
Other board members selected Helsley from among four applicants, said Elizabeth Douphner, executive director of the Topanga Canyon-based district.
Two other board members, Lesley Devine and Dennis Washburn, also of Calabasas, have begun new four-year terms after being unopposed for reelection in next month’s general election, Douphner said. The board has five members.
Helsley, whose husband, Harold, is an elected director of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, is a former teacher and outdoor education consultant for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The district is a state-chartered agency that assists landowners in a 192-square-mile area between Encino and Thousand Oaks with erosion and brush control.
