Eight young Soviet composers will join hosts Herb Alpert and his A&M; Records partner Jerry Moss today for a tour of A&M;’s Hollywood recording studios and a discussion of the state of music and recording in the Soviet Union and the United States. The composers’ visit is part of the U.S./U.S.S.R. Young Composers Exchange, a program established in 1986 to share new music and musical ideas among emerging composers and music specialists from the two countries. Joining the group for the discussion will be Los Angeles Philharmonic composers-in-residence Steven Stucky and Rand Steiger, musicians Dave Grusin and Michel Colombier and USC School of Music Dean Larry Livingston. The Soviet composers were selected for the 1988 exchange by the Soviet Union of Composers. They were chosen from various Soviet republics to represent the country’s diverse cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds.
