MCI Communications Corp.’s third-quarter profit soared to $99 million, compared to $17 million a year ago. The results include a pretax gain of $11 million from previously negotiated antitrust settlements and a pretax charge of $8 million associated with a contract settlement. The Washington-based communications firm said: “Once again, our results have been driven by strong revenue growth and, for the sixth consecutive quarter, marked improvement in our operating margins.”
