The Communist-led General Confederation of Labor, France’s largest union, launched its “Day of Action” with marches in all major cities and strikes that disrupted some transit, postal and electrical services. The one-day walkout was in support of demands for an increase in the minimum monthly wage from $758 to $968. The union is also asking for protection of purchasing power, better working conditions and retirement protection. More widespread strikes are planned Thursday by other unions representing public employees.
