MARGARITA, Venezuela — Fulgencio Obelmejias’ defense of his World Boxing Assn. super middleweight title against Thomas Hearns has been called off, Obelmejias’ promoter, Luis Spada, said Tuesday.
Spada said the fight, which was scheduled for Nov. 4 in Las Vegas, is off “indefinitely.”
Obelmejias, a Venezuelan, has said that a rib injury he sustained in a bout with South Korea’s Chong Pal Park has prevented him from fighting.
Obelmejias has been told by his doctors that he will have to rest for about a month before resuming training, said Spada.
Fight promoter Bob Arum was searching for another opponent for Hearns.
Also scheduled on the Nov. 4 card are Michael Nunn’s International Boxing Federation middleweight title defense against Juan Domingo Roldan and Matthew Hilton’s IBF junior middleweight title defense against Robert Hines.
