La Verne : Special Vote on Fireworks

The cost of a special election has not stopped the City Council from deciding to let voters determine whether fireworks should be allowed in the city.
The council, which banned fireworks last month, unanimously decided to hold an election in February to decide whether fireworks declared “safe and sane” by the state fire marshal should be allowed in the city.
The action followed a successful referendum drive spearheaded by local service organizations. The groups say they stand to lose thousands of dollars each year if the fireworks ban is upheld.
The city may have to pay an estimated $35,850 to pay for the election, according to City Clerk Kathy Hamm.
