While watching interviews with some of the 1 million Americans who traveled to Kennedy Space Center or Edwards Air Force Base to catch a glimpse of the space shuttle Discovery’s success, a curious thing occurred to me. Why would so many people travel so many miles in the dawn’s cold, braving traffic jams and crowds in order to “experience the pride of being an American” on such an occasion, when a great many of those same people will not travel three blocks on Nov. 8 to elect our next President?
