John Davis, former junior welterweight boxing champion, was convicted of second-degree murder and robbery in the 1976 beating and stabbing death of a 48-year-old man in Los Angeles.

Davis, 35, who officials say fought under the name Steven Hearon, started boxing in Houston in 1978 and had an overall record of 27-4 with 20 knockouts.

Davis was found guilty of the slaying of William Brownell, a Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. secretary, whose battered body was found in a Wilshire district apartment in February 1976.

Davis, who had also been acquitted in the October 1978 slaying of another Los Angeles-area man, could receive a maximum 11 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled Dec. 2.
