Hart High came up a few yards short Friday night in a 21-15 Foothill League loss at Schurr, and its problems close to the goal line could end up costing the Indians a berth in the Southern Section playoffs.
Hart failed to score after driving to the Schurr 2-yard line in the second quarter and saw its final drive end at the Spartan 15.
With 46 seconds left, the Indians (5-4 overall, 2-2 in league play) advanced to the Spartan 12, but quarterback Rob Westervelt completed a pass to tight end Brian Allen that lost 3 yards. Westervelt then threw 3 incomplete passes into the end zone.
In the second quarter, Hart had driven to the Schurr 2 but lost 25 yards on personal-foul and holding penalties. Scott Etheridge then missed a 43-yard field-goal attempt.
Schurr (7-2, 3-1) was bolstered by a strong running game. Cesar Burgueno ran for 2 touchdowns and 61 yards and Frank Martinez added 61 yards rushing.
Westervelt completed 21 of 39 passes for 242 yards, including a 10-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Allen. Hart’s Howard Blackwell rushed for a game-high 77 yards in 22 carries.
