Prep Football Roundup : Mission Viejo Rolls, 42-7; Takes Title

No. 1-ranked Mission Viejo High School clinched the South Coast League championship with a 42-7 rout of San Clemente Saturday at Mission Viejo.

The Diablos (9-0 overall, 4-0 in league play) scored the first two times they had the ball. The first score came on a 1-yard run by Eric Ekdahl to cap an 8-play, 72-yard drive. Two minutes later, running back Jim Higashi scored on a 19-yard run.

Mission Viejo scored twice again in the second quarter to take a 28-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Troy Kopp scored on a 7-yard run after the Diablos blocked a punt. That was followed by a 47-yard touchdown run by Ekdahl.

It was more of the same in the second half, as Mission Viejo scored on its first possession. Jonathan Hayes caught an 11-yard pass from Kopp to finish off a 61-yard drive.

San Clemente finally scored on a 10-yard run by Marc Bohn. Mission Viejo closed out the scoring on a 3-yard run by Doug Westerhoff.

San Clemente falls to 1-8 and 0-4.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 17, Western 6--Running back John Mountain gained 164 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in 26 carries to lead the Colonists at Western High School.

Mountain gave Anaheim (5-4, 3-1) a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 7-yard run. The fourth-down play capped an 11-play, 59-yard drive.

Kicker Art Palamares made the score 10-0 with a 44-yard field goal with 4:55 left in the third quarter.

Anaheim upped the score to 17-0 when Mountain fell on a fumble by fellow running back Loa Matauimu in the end zone for a touchdown.

Western (4-5, 3-1) had trouble moving the ball all night. The Pioneers scored with 50 seconds left in the game on a 25-yard pass from Miles Roberson to Gilbert Brito.
