Local News in Brief : Moratorium on Motels Extended

The Gardena City Council voted Tuesday to extend a moratorium on new hotel and motel construction for another 10 months and 15 days.

The extension will give city officials time to study the impact of hotels and motels on the quality of life in Gardena, said City Atty. Michael Karger.

A 45-day emergency moratorium prohibiting new hotels and motels was passed in September, after Gardena residents complained that there were too many motels in some sections of the city, particularly along Western Avenue near Rosecrans Avenue, near an unincorporated county area.

The ban does not include the proposed Eldorado Center hotel, which will be financed partly with public funds, Karger said. In 1985, the city sold $11.1 million in bonds to pay for the hotel parking structure.

Also exempt from the moratorium are proposed hotels and motels for which plans were filed with the Community Development Department before Sept. 13, when the ordinance took effect.
