Buena Park Woman Wins $1 Million

SACRAMENTO — Luck turned Saturday for a Buena Park woman when she won a $1-million annuity and ended a 3-week drought of millionaires on the state lottery Big Spin.

“I haven’t been lucky in a long time,” said Betty Haugen, 50. “It must have been my turn. Every minute, I prayed.”

Haugen, who works for a Long Beach tool company, said she is uncertain how she will spend her money. She will receive $40,000 a year for 20 years after taxes.

“I’m going to take a trip. I don’t know where yet for sure.”

She and her husband of 26 years, Kenneth, have four children and two grandchildren.

Haugen was the first spinner since Oct. 22 to win $1 million. Nine other people Saturday won a total of $490,000, with prizes ranging from $20,000 to $120,000.

The Double Rainbow scratch-off game symbols were a wishbone and the letters A and V.

Graciela Montesinos, 34, a secretary from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico, who has been staying with her cousin in Redlands, won $120,000.

A retired San Francisco zoo worker, 88-year-old Gabriel Fetisoff, and a retired telephone employee from Seal Beach, 69-year-old Anne Melvin, each won $100,000.

Isabel Calderone, 74, a retired federal worker who lives in San Diego, received $50,000.

Fresno resident Bette Caudle, 68, spun for $40,000.

Four spinners won $20,000 each: C.A. Vanderklis Jr., 51, of Arcata; Tam Nguyen, 36, of Baldwin Park; Ruby Edgington, 47, of Santee, and Jean Smith, 45, of Folsom.
