Small-Craft Harbor for Bolsa Chica

As a frequent, year-round user of Dana Point Harbor, even though a non-boater, I am saddened to read that events are moving against a new small-craft harbor at Bolsa Chica.

I think the Huntington Beach City Council is wrong to preclude an ocean cut and breakwatered entrance channel that makes such a harbor an attractive possibility.

I realize it has been 17 years since the agreement between the landowner and the state Department Fish and Game led to the initial salt-marsh restoration. The longstanding deadlock on how to restore and develop the rest of the oil field property needs to come unstuck.

But to start off the new Bolsa Chica Planning Coalition effort by eliminating the best feature of a plan that has been conditionally approved by the county of Orange and the California Coastal Commission is regrettable.

Signal Landmark may be worn down and want a way out of the stalemate, but there are other public interests besides the Amigos de Bolsa Chica and surfers.

Dana Point Harbor is a wonderful public amenity, highly appreciated and very well used by people of all ages. With so few coastal lowlands available, it is a shame to see the opportunity lost at Bolsa Chica.
