NHL Roundup : Surging Calgary Keeps Hartford in Slump, 5-2

Joe Nieuwendyk scored 2 goals, and Joe Mullen had a goal and 2 assists as the red-hot Calgary Flames defeated the Hartford Whalers, 5-2, Saturday night at Hartford, Conn.
It was the fifth consecutive victory for Calgary, which is 14-4-3--the best record in the NHL. The Flames have won 8 of their last 9 and have outscored their opposition, 43-16, in those games.
The Whalers have just 1 victory in their last 8 games.
Montreal 5, Chicago 3--Russ Courtnall scored 2 goals and had 2 assists to lead the Canadiens past the Blackhawks at Montreal.
The win enabled the Canadiens to move into first place in the Adams Division by themselves.
Washington 3, New Jersey 2--Geoff Courtnall scored on a 15-foot shot with 48 seconds left to lift the Capitals to a victory over the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.
Washington had taken a 2-0 lead on goals by Steve Leach and Mike Ridley before the Devils got even on third-period goals by Kirk Muller and Pat Verbeek.
New York Islanders 6, Pittsburgh 3--Pat LaFontaine scored in the first minute and assisted on a goal by Alan Kerr as the Islanders broke a 4-game winless streak at Uniondale, N.Y.
The Islanders held NHL scoring leader Mario Lemieux of the Penguins without a point until 52 seconds remained, when Lemieux assisted on a goal by Rob Brown.
New York Rangers 4, Minnesota 1--Brian Mullen scored the Rangers’ first 2 goals as New York increased its Patrick Division lead to 5 points over Pittsburgh by beating the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.
Edmonton 9, Toronto 1--Glenn Anderson scored 4 goals as the Oilers overwhelmed the Maple Leafs at Toronto.
Quebec 6, Philadelphia 5--Michel Goulet scored early in the third period to snap a tie and push the Nordiques past the Flyers at Quebec City.
Vancouver 3, St. Louis 2--Petri Skriko scored with 6:36 left at St. Louis to beat the Blues and end the Canucks’ 5-game winless streak.
