Australia, U.S. Extend Military Base Agreement Another 10 Years

CANBERRA, Australia — The United States and Australia have extended their agreement on two U.S. military bases for another 10 years, Prime Minister Bob Hawke told Parliament today.
Hawke, who acknowledges that the bases make Australia a potential target in case of nuclear war, said the United States has agreed to allow more Australian involvement in the management of the bases at Pine Gap and Nurrungar.
In Washington, a State Department official confirmed Hawke’s statement and said the United States is pleased that the agreement has been extended. The two space satellite facilities had until now operated under agreements that could be terminated at one year’s notice by either side.
