Church, Community Groups to Provide Holiday Meals for Hungry, Homeless

Tom Turkey will grace San Diego tables today and on Thanksgiving as several churches and community organizations scramble to provide two days of holiday meals for the hungry and homeless.

Tons of turkey, carloads of cranberries and other fixings for a holiday feast will be served at little or no cost today and Thursday throughout the county, including the following San Diego area locations:

- The Catholic Workers Assn. will serve a traditional ham and turkey dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the St. Vincent de Paul Center, 1501 Imperial Ave. On Thanksgiving Day, El Indio Mexican Restaurant will donate and serve brunch at the center from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The Public Lawyers Committee of the San Diego County Bar Assn. will also serve a holiday meal at the center from 4 to 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.

- Life Ministries has booked a brass quintet to entertain holiday diners as they feast on turkey beginning at 1:30 p.m. today at their mission, 1150 J St.

- Volunteers for the Salvation Army will dish up an estimated 2,500 meals on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 11:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day at the Civic Center, 202 C St. Free transportation is available in some areas. For information, call 239-8027.

- Super Junior Market, 1036 7th Ave., will provide a Thanksgiving Day meal, complete with dressing, yams, potatoes and rolls, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- Christ Lutheran Church will provide meals from noon to 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at 4761 Cass St. in Pacific Beach. For information, call 483-2300.

- For a $1 donation, Our Lady of Angels Senior Center will serve meals for senior citizens and the general public at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at 655 22nd St.

- Volunteers are needed to help serve Thursday’s noon meal at St. Jude’s Nutrition Center, 3751 Boston Ave. For information, call 264-4771. A $1 donation is being asked for the meal.

- Turkey dinners for senior citizens will be served at noon Thursday at the Samahan Senior Center, 2952 Market St. A $1 donation is requested.

- The Salvation Army of North County plans to serve up to 500 free turkey dinners Thanksgiving Day at the Elks Club, 444 Country Club Lane, in Oceanside beginning at 11 a.m. To sign up for the dinner, call the Salvation Army at 439-1021. Volunteers and donations are also needed.
