TV Projections

I can’t understand the furor over exit poll projections before the polls close in California.
A news “junkie” (I begin with the MacNeil/Lehrer “NewsHour” at 3 p.m. and finish with Ted Koppel at 11:30 p.m.), I watch four hours of news each day.
Except Election Day--on this day neither the radio nor the TV is turned on. This year I started the new Tony Hillerman mystery “A Thief of Time” at 3 p.m. and had completed it by the time the 11 p.m. news came on, at which time I found out that George Bush had already given his acceptance speech.
The mystery novel caused my blood pressure to rise a few degrees, but not to the degree that the “projections” would have done.
