A female police officer sued the Sacramento Police Department for $1 million, charging male officers harassed her because she insisted on working during the overnight shift when they wanted to doze. Annie Cox’s Superior Court suit listed Assistant Police Chief Jerry V. Finney and five other male members of the department as defendants. Cox’s attorney, Nancy Kirk, said the complaint charges discrimination and harassment on the job. “It does not involve solicitation for sexual favors,” Kirk said. Cox’s suit said clashes with male officers began after she volunteered for the overnight shift so she could attend college in the daytime. She charged that a common practice of patrol officers on the shift was to park their cars in inconspicuous places and sleep between 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Cox said she insisted on keeping up her patrol work during those hours. She said that in at least one case male officers exposed her to danger by refusing to respond when she needed help.
