Carole Merle of France came out of the second starting group to win the season-opening World Cup ski race, clocking 1 minute 25.36 seconds in the Super G competition at Schladming, Austria.
Merle started 25th and overtook early leader Ulrike Maier of Austria, who had a 1:26.01 trip down the 1,793-meter course.
Austria’s Ulrike Maier was second in 1:26.01. Olympic combined champion Anita Wachter of Austria and Regine Moesenlechner of West Germany tied for third at 1:26.26.
