Bush Names Choices for SBA, Peace Corps Posts

WASHINGTON — President-elect Bush, filling out the senior ranks of his Administration, on Wednesday named Susan Engeleiter of Wisconsin, who lost a U.S. Senate race last year, to head the Small Business Administration and Georgia state lawmaker Paul D. Coverdell to head the Peace Corps.

They were among more than a dozen high-level posts announced by Bush’s transition office.

Engeleiter, a member of the Wisconsin Senate, was defeated by Democrat Herbert Kohl last year in the election for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Democrat William Proxmire. She is an attorney and former teacher.

Coverdell is the Republican leader of the Georgia Senate and is president and chief executive officer of Coverdell & Co. of Atlanta.

Bush also announced his intention to nominate Bruce S. Gelb, vice chairman of the board of directors of the Bristol-Myers Co., as director of the United States Information Agency. Gelb is now in charge of Bristol-Myers’ consumer products and health care groups.

Bush also selected Fred M. Zeder III, who was a campaign and transition adviser, to be president of the Overseas Private Investment Corp. Zeder served from 1982 to 1987 as President Reagan’s representative for Micronesian Status Negotiations. Zeder was an official in the Interior Department in the Gerald R. Ford Administration.

Constance Barry Newman, a campaign aide in charge of rallying support among minority groups, was chosen as director of the Office of Personnel Management.
