Vreni Schneider of Switzerland, trailing after the first run, rallied to win a women’s giant slalom at Tignes, France, in 2:18.01 and tied a World Cup record with her 11th victory of the season.
With victories in all 5 giant slaloms this season, Schneider clinched the 1988-89 giant slalom title. She also extended her lead in the overall standings to 286-206 over Carole Merle of France. Schneider’s 11th victory tied a record set in 1973 by Annemarie Moser-Proell of Austria.
Merle was second in 2:18.78 for her two runs, followed by Maria Walliser of Switzerland in 2:18.86.
