A 25-year-old San Diego man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Leucadia on Sunday when he failed to see the train approaching because of thick fog.
Jeffrey A. Holmberg, a mechanic who lived in the 2500 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, was sitting on the train tracks about 5:30 p.m. after watching the Super Bowl with friends who lived nearby, according to Deputy Coroner Charles Kelley. He did not see the northbound train approaching at 90 m.p.h. until it was too late to avoid being hit, Kelley added.
