Four International Red Cross workers returned to Beirut, one month after death threats and a kidnaping prompted the humanitarian organization to suspend its operations in Lebanon. A spokesman for the group, headquartered in Geneva, confirmed the workers’ arrival. Francoise Derron, Michel Raymond Berger and Angelo Bruaedinger arrived at Beirut airport while mission chief Michel Dufour came by road from Damascus, Syria, an airport source said. A Lebanese official said the team will reopen the group’s Beirut offices, closed Dec. 20. That was four days after the release of Red Cross official Peter Winkler, kidnaped one month earlier. The Lebanese official said the Red Cross has received “credible assurances” that its workers will not be subject to further attacks.
