The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team, the runner-up in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., will open play in the NCAA Division II West regional when the 14th-ranked Lady Matadors (21-8) meet independent Florida Atlantic (21-7) at 6 tonight at Cal Poly Pomona’s Kellogg Gym.
Third-ranked Pomona (25-5), which defeated Northridge on Saturday in the final of the CCAA tournament, will play Cal State Hayward (13-14), the winner of the Northern California Athletic Conference tournament, at 8 p.m.
Tonight’s winners will play for the regional championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Pomona.
Northridge’s only previous appearance in the Division II playoffs was in 1986 when Pomona defeated the Lady Matadors, 66-46, in the West regional final en route to winning its third national title.
The winner of the West regional will meet the winner of the Great Lakes regional in the Division II quarterfinals on either March 17 or 18 at a site to be determined.
