Troops, Tanks Put Pressure on Strikers at Yugoslav Mine

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — Tanks and troops rolled by a struck magnesite mine in Yugoslavia’s Kosovo province Friday in a show of force as 600 miners refused to work for a second successive day.

As air force jets screamed over the Goles mine, two columns of 23 tanks and 15 trucks full of troops rolled through the village of Magura, 145 miles south of Belgrade, as the miners continued the strike, witnesses said.

Mine officials said the army convoys continued to maneuver on roads near the village intending to put psychological pressure on the miners.

The officials said miners were striking in defiance of compulsory work orders served under state of emergency rules, adding that the authorities were prepared to suspend the miners without pay and, if necessary, to hire new people.
