President Selects Armacost to Be Ambassador to Japan

WASHINGTON — President Bush has chosen State Department official Michael H. Armacost to be U.S. ambassador to Japan, succeeding Mike Mansfield, the White House announced Friday. Armacost, undersecretary of state for political affairs since 1984, was ambassador to the Philippines from 1982 until 1984.
