General Dynamics’ Convair Division said it will set up plants in El Centro and Tijuana in a bid to reduce labor costs. No layoffs among GD’s 8,200 San Diego employees are expected to result, spokesman Jack Isabel said.
Convair’s current major contracts are to build the sea-launched Cruise missile for the Navy, the Advanced Cruise missile for the Air Force and fuselage sections for the MD-11 commercial aircraft.
Each plant will eventually employ about 100 workers after opening sometime next year, Isabel said. The El Centro plant will be about 65,000 square feet.
General Dynamics’ Electronics Division announced last year that it would set up a sub-assembly plant in Tijuana, which is scheduled to open this spring.
