Gov. Deukmejian on State Budget and Times Response

The basic problem with the California “Fiscal Gridlock” (editorial, March 16) is that we lack responsible, intelligent, courageous leadership. The answer is simply in more revenues as required from a combination of income, sales, gas and user taxes which reflect on ability to pay.
Taxing our homes does not necessarily have a correlation with financial ability, and adds to the tremendous obstacles faced by young families hoping to become home owners in this inflationary real estate marketplace. We should be able to do better for our children.
Competent leadership can sell a good, equitable program. Without it, we are where we are today.
