PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Left-handed reliever Ed Vande Berg and infielder Bobby Meacham were placed on irrevocable waivers by the Texas Rangers today for the purpose of giving them their release.
The moves were made before noon today, at which time the players’ 1989 contracts would have become guaranteed.
Vande Berg, who pitched for the Dodgers in 1986, appeared in 26 games for Texas last season, posting a 2-2 record and a 4.14 earned run average. Meacham came to the Rangers last December from the Yankees for outfielder Bob Brower. He hit .271 for the Yankees in 1987 but dropped to .217 last season.
