Aztec Football Suspends Mt. Miguel’s Mathis

Haywood Mathis, a freshman linebacker from Mount Miguel High School, has been suspended from the San Diego State football team for academic reasons, Coach Al Luginbill announced.
Mathis will be prohibited from participating in spring practice, which begins Monday and concludes May 6.
Luginbill also said that Robert Malsack, a sophomore defensive lineman from Escondido High School, has quit the team, and Todd Vradenburg, a junior offensive lineman from Pasadena Blair High School, will not return because of a career-ending knee injury.
BASEBALL
UC San Diego scored three runs in the eighth but fell one short of Cal State Stanislaus, 5-4, in Turlock. Stanislaus (11-3) and UCSD (12-9) are both Division III schools, ranked sixth and ninth nationally. Pinch-hitter Anthony Sanchez was two for three for UCSD, and Dave Ligerman and Gary Fessia both were two for four with two RBIs for the Tritons.
Point Loma Nazarene College lost a 2-0 lead in the seventh when pitcher Mike Ratekin yielded two bases-empty home runs to visiting Southern California College. The 2-2 tie lasted until the 10th, when Southern California scored two more runs for a 4-2 victory.
A.J. Napier went three for four with two doubles for PLNC.
SOFTBALL
Oregon’s Katie Wiese pitched a no-hitter to beat San Diego State, 3-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at San Diego State. The Aztecs also were shut out, 4-0, in the second game.
SDSU fell to 13-19-1, while Oregon improved to 27-7. The Aztecs’ only two hits came from Valerie Finley and Leslie Lung.
BOXING
Defending champion Terry Norris of San Diego scored a unanimous 12-round decision over former International Boxing Federation champion Buster Drayton to retain the North American Boxing Federation junior-middleweight crown. Norris, 21, ranked No. 4 by the IBF, raised his record to 20-2 with two knockouts.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
San Diego State lost at No. 1 and 2 singles but defeated visiting Harvard, 6-3. Dorey Brandt defeated Amy Deloney, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, and Jessica Buss defeated Jackie Farrell, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles for the Aztecs (11-6). Brandt and Kristen Hill defeated Deloney and Jamie Henicoff, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Buss and Sondra Mitchell defeated Kristen Bland and Christina Dragomirescu, 6-2, 6-3.
No. 16 University of San Diego lost to 15th-ranked Arizona, 5-4, in Tucson.
VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State got 15 kills from Pat Henchel to down visiting LaVerne, 15-2, 15-7, 16-14.
Ed Rapp contributed eight digs, and Doug Potter led SDSU (12-12) with five blocks.
