IN BRIEF : 2 Naismith Honorees Selected

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Seniors Tim Hardaway of the University of Texas at El Paso and Paulette Backstrom of Bowling Green have been named winners of this year’s Francis Pomeroy Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame awards.
The awards, chosen by the college coaches’ associations for men’s and women’s basketball, honor the outstanding male college player under 6 feet and the outstanding female player under 5 feet, 6 inches.
Hardaway, 5 feet, 11 inches, was the university’s all-time scoring leader with 1,586 points during his four-year career, including a 21.8 average this season. Backstrom, 5 feet, 3 inches, has led the Mid-American Conference in assists for the last two seasons, with a 7.3 average. She was named the outstanding player in this year’s conference tournament.
