THE PREPS : Softball Roundup : Rice Pitches 1-Hitter to Put Fountain Valley Into Sole Possession of First Place

Rae Rice pitched a one-hitter and Fountain Valley High School defeated Edison, 9-0, Tuesday in a Sunset League softball game at Edison.
The victory moved the Barons (16-5-1 overall, 5-2 in league play) into sole possession of first place, one game ahead of Marina and Ocean View.
Rice (7-3) struck out 14 batters and allowed only a second-inning single.
She also hit a three-run homer in the third. Shannon Dolan had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for the Barons.
In other Sunset League games:
Huntington Beach 1, Marina 0--Pam Fogg (8-6) pitched a two-hitter, striking out four, for the Oilers (11-11, 4-3) at Huntington Beach. The Oilers took the lead in the second, as Sasha Kyle scored from second base on a dropped fly ball.
Ocean View 5, Westminster 0--Marla Pickard (9-6) pitched a one-hitter, striking out four, for Ocean View (15-11, 4-3) at Westminster. Pickard allowed only a single by Nicole Boelm to lead off the third. Lisa Rousey hit a two-run homer for the Seahawks.
In the Angelus League:
Bishop Amat 2, Rosary 1--Janice Stadel had two hits and scored the only run for visiting Rosary.
St. Joseph 2, Mater Dei 0--Lisa Fernandez pitched a one-hitter, striking out 14, for the Jesters (8-0 in league play) at St. Joseph. Fernandez allowed only a third-inning single by Cathy Donohue. Bev Stighbaur and Michelle Ourique had RBI singles for St. Joseph. Terri Kobata (6-4) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven, but took the loss for Mater Dei (14-6-2, 4-3-1).
In the Century League:
Canyon 10, Santa Ana Valley 0--Kristin Heizer (10-7) pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine. After a walk in the first and fifth innings accounted for Santa Ana Valley’s only two baserunners, she retired the final nine batters. Heizer also went three for four with a double. Catcher Chanele Chambrone drove in three runs with a double and a groundout. Canyon (16-9, 6-1) is tied for first with Villa Park. Santa Ana Valley is 6-15 and 0-7.
In the Freeway League:
Buena Park 5, Troy 0--Shannon Akau tossed a one-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none at Buena Park High School. Akau also went two for three with a run scored. Christina Urban had two hits and scored two runs. Buena Park improves to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the league; Troy is 2-8 and 1-6.
Sunny Hills 2, Fullerton 0--Amy Huett pitched a no-hitter, striking out eight and walking two to outpitch Cathleen Kennedy, who allowed one earned run on two hits. Huett drove in the first run of the game with a single in the first inning that drove in Stacey Thurber from second. Sunny Hills improves to 5-2 in the league while Fullerton drops to 2-5.
In the Garden Grove League:
Bolsa Grande 2, Pacifica 1--Melinda Acosta hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Bolsa Grande (6-2, 4-7) the victory. Karie Benefiel (6-8) pitched a six hitter, striking out four, for the victory.
Kennedy 4, Los Amigos 0--Gina Alcoser pitched a one-hitter while going two for three with two runs scored for No. 2 ranked Kennedy (19-4, 10-1) at Los Amigos. Freshman Danielle McLeod went two for three with a double and a RBI.
La Quinta 13, Santiago 3--Cheri Williams had a three-run homer and Jill Bishop had three hits and three RBIs for La Quinta (15-7, 7-4) at Santiago.
In the Olympic League:
Whittier Christian 12, Santa Margarita 4--Cherilyn Culp had two hits, including a grand slam, for the Heralds (9-6, 8-3) at Whittier Christian.
In the Orange League:
Valencia 1, Anaheim 0 (15 innings)--Natasha Dumoski (9-11) pitched a five-hitter, striking out 18, for the Tigers (9-12, 4-3) at Valencia. Jennifer Butler won the game with a RBI single with no outs in the 15th.
Western 4, Brea-Olinda 0--Dawn Fowler (7-4) pitched a three-hitter, striking out five, for the Pioneers (19-5, 5-2) at Western. Wendy McDermott had two hits and two RBIs for Western.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 8, Woodbridge 2--Margo Melendrez tossed a three-hitter as Laguna Hills (15-6, 5-2) capitalized on five errors by visiting Woodbridge (6-1), which suffered its first loss in league play. Lisa Wehren was knocked out after four innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits. Shelby Kowalcyk’s two-run triple highlighted a five-run second inning.
In the Sunrise League:
Connelly 13, Our Lady of Loretto 0--Winning pitcher Santina Delligatta (6-0) pitched a no-hitter and hit a solo home run to lead Connelly (6-0, 9-3) to the victory at Loretto. Shannon Maple and Cynthia Flores also hit solo homers for Connelly.
