Extra Deputies Due at Gang Killing Site

In the wake of a drive-by shooting of a star athlete in Norwalk, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will send extra deputies to the area’s gang hot spots this weekend to prevent retaliation.
Deputies will enforce a 10 p.m.-to-sunrise curfew in the south end of Norwalk and the northern part of Artesia, where two rival gangs, Varrio and Chivas, have fought over the last year.
At a special meeting Friday to discuss gang-related problems, members of the Artesia and Norwalk city councils expressed fear that there might be some violence because of the killing of Juan Enriquez.
Enriquez, 18, an honor student whose death was mourned Thursday by about 2,000 fellow John Glenn High School students, was not a member of either gang, police said.
“I’m fearful of what might take place this weekend,” said Norwalk Councilman Marcial Rodriguez.
