Syrian gunners blasted Beirut’s Christian enclave with 400 howitzer shells while five artillery rounds crashed into Muslim West Beirut in the most serious violations so far of a three-week-old truce in Lebanon. No casualties were reported. A spokesman for Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun denied that his predominantly Christian army troops fired on West Beirut, but he warned: “We won’t remain idle if the cease-fire violations persist.”
