Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa High placed second in the 100 meters in The Athletics Congress junior championships at Ohio State University on Saturday.
The top two finishers in each event qualify for the national junior (for athletes 19 and under) team that will compete in a series of international meets next month.
Burnham, who won her second consecutive titles in the 100 and 200 in last week’s state championships at Cerritos College, was beaten by Stanford freshman Chryste Gaines (11.44 seconds to 11.55) in the 100 final after winning her qualifying heat in 11.94.
Burnham is scheduled to run in the heats and the final of the 200 today, and Cal State Northridge freshman Garrett Noel will compete in the men’s javelin.
Lolita Pile of Cal State Northridge placed third in the women’s triple jump Saturday in the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA’s Drake Stadium.
Pile, runner-up in last month’s NCAA Division II championships, bounded 41 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
Sheila Hudson (43-9 3/4) and Sabrina Williams (42-4), both of the Nike Coast track club, placed first and second, respectively.
Two other CSUN athletes--Darcy Arreola and Walt Stewart--were entered in the meet, but did not compete. Arreola withdrew from the women’s 800 because of illness and Stewart did not compete in the high jump when the event was canceled due to a lack of competitors.
