The Nation - News from June 12, 1989

Late spring was anything but mild in the southwestern plains as the area was pounded by tornadoes, thunderstorms, flooding and golf-ball-size hail. A tornado swept through a truck stop in Clinton, Ark., leveling the Country Kitchen restaurant. Six people were treated at a Clinton hospital. Twisters touched down near Pandora, Langtry and San Antonio, Tex., damaging several buildings and a mobile home. Winds threw a storage shed 100 yards, while a tree snapped in San Antonio and fell on a home. Hail fell in Texas’ Kinney County and at Alamo Heights. Heavy rain from central Texas to Oklahoma and Kansas caused rivers and streams to rise. Coffeyville, Kan., was drenched by 7 1/4 inches of rain that flooded roads and swelled streams. Elsewhere, a cold front pushing across the northern plains and central Rockies dumped showers and thunderstorms from the Great Basin to the Dakotas. Storms were also scattered across Florida.
