Forty inmates at a county honor camp rioted Tuesday night in what police called a racially motivated incident.
Black and Latino prisoners attacked one another with rocks and fists at 7:45 p.m. at the camp in Descanso, the Sheriff’s Department reported. Order was restored 10 minutes later, but three inmates were treated for minor injuries, while 13 others were transferred to other facilities, officials said.
A cutoff of cigarette sales at the jail contributed to the riot, said Capt. Lewis Jones. A smoking ban will go into effect at all county jails on Saturday, he said.
