More snow blanketed the northern Rocky Mountains, adding to the 5 inches that covered the Continental Divide after overnight snow showers, and a dozen cities shivered in record early autumn cold. Up to 3 inches of snow was expected by late in the day in the upper elevations of Montana’s mountains, where 5 inches was already on the ground at West Yellowstone by morning, the weather service said. Up to 7 inches was expected in the high country in northwest Wyoming, while Sun Valley and the eastern mountains of Idaho expected as much as 4 inches on top of 4 inches already on the ground at Bald Mountain. A dozen cities in the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota and Washington state recorded early morning record cold temperatures for Oct. 3, including Minneapolis, where the morning low was 27 degrees.
