The victim of a fatal shooting in Mira Mesa was identified Friday as Barbara Pacheco, 13, a student at Challenger Junior High School, a deputy San Diego County coroner said.
The girl was found dead about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, after police were summoned to a home in the 10800 block of Parkdale Drive, just around the corner from the school. The coroner’s deputy said the girl died of a single shot in the face.
Pacheco had been visiting a classmate, a 12-year-old boy, who authorities said placed a 911 call to the San Diego Police Department at 4:20 p.m., saying that a friend had been shot.
Police said Friday that the homicide unit is investigating, although officials believe the gun was fired accidentally.
