CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF - N. CALIFORNIA - Beetle Devastates Timber in 6 Counties

A bark beetle infestation, aggravated by drought in six Northern California counties, has killed enough timber to build up to 600,000 homes, officials said. The California Board of Forestry declared infestation zones in Sierra County and parts of Placer, Nevada, Yuba, Plumas and Lassen counties. It is the third infestation declared this year involving damage over 6.7 million acres from Lassen to San Diego counties.
